The England rugby team trains at Pennyhill Park, and the hotel has a meeting room named after it. In the Power Room, a converted cottage, a faint rugby pitch is printed on the 10-seat boardroom table. Three smaller rooms are named after the mountaineers Tenzing Norgay, Junko Tabei and Nirmal Purja.

The ivy-clad house stands in 120 acres at Bagshot, backing onto the Crown Estate's Swinley Forest. It opened as a hotel in 1972 and was the first member of what is now the Exclusive Collection. There are 124 bedrooms and suites, all individually designed, and 12 of the dog-friendly rooms open straight onto the grounds. The grounds have beehives, a kitchen garden and an ornamental waterfall.

Latymer, in the oldest part of the house, holds a Michelin star and serves a Discovery menu under a beamed ceiling. Hillfield cooks with produce from the estate and the Surrey Hills, and Themis serves breakfasts and bowls in the spa. The spa covers 45,000 sq ft. Its 25m indoor pool has underwater speakers, and there is an ice igloo, a tepidarium, copper hot tubs and four private cabanas.

For events, the whole Terrace Wing is now set aside for weddings. There are 18 meeting and event spaces, taking up to 196 theatre-style or 280 for a formal dinner. Companies can book the entire estate, helipad included. Heathrow is 25 minutes away and Ascot about 12.
