About the venue

Victorian manor near Betchworth, finished in 1869 and used as a Canadian Army hospital in the Second World War. Weddings for 120 in a garden gazebo or the Hartsfield Lounge, a conference wing led by the 120-seat Hartsfield Hall, and 50 bedrooms across the manor, Annexe and old Lodge.

Arthur Woodriff Jaffray never lived in the house he was building at Hartsfield. He died in a shooting accident in December 1864, and carvings around the main entrance suggest the manor near Betchworth was finished in 1869. In 1871 his widow Mary married Captain James Moir, and the couple had six children. A Betchworth coal merchant later recalled seeing the Princes of Teck, brothers of Queen Mary, leaving the house in a dog cart pulled by tandem horses.

During the Second World War the Canadian Army ran Hartsfield as a hospital. Afterwards it was a hotel for a time, then a Midland Bank staff training college, which added several buildings. Today it is a 50-bedroom hotel in the Surrey Hills, five miles from junction 8 of the M25 and nine miles from Gatwick.

Ceremonies for up to 120 take place at the garden gazebo between April and October, or indoors in the high-ceilinged Hartsfield Lounge. Smaller weddings use the Brockham Suite, which has a fireplace and views towards the hills. The wedding breakfast is served in the Terrace Restaurant, whose doors open onto a garden terrace with a giant chess board.

Most meetings happen in a purpose-built conference wing, where Hartsfield Hall seats 120. Bedrooms are split between the manor, the Annexe and the Lodge, which was once the gatehouse. Dogs can stay in the Annexe Garden Terrace rooms and join their owners in the bar, lounge and on the terrace.
