About the venue
Home of the Dukes of Richmond since 1697, at the heart of the 11,000-acre Goodwood Estate near Chichester. The State Apartments are hired exclusively for weddings licensed for 245, parties and corporate dinners, with the 91-bedroom Goodwood Hotel close by.
The 1st Duke of Richmond, a son of Charles II, bought Goodwood in 1697 so he could ride with the fashionable Charlton Hunt. He had been coming here since he was 17. Later Dukes enlarged the Jacobean house: the hall was classicised in 1730, a Portland stone south wing followed in the late 1740s, and James Wyatt added a north wing in 1771.
The house sits at the heart of the 11,000-acre estate outside Chichester. Its State Apartments hold one of the great private art collections, with work by Stubbs, Canaletto and Van Dyck. The Egyptian Dining Room, recently restored by the current Duke, is decorated with gilded cartouches, sphinxes and crocodiles. The four copper domes on the roof are being restored, and some scaffolding will be visible until summer 2027.
A butler greets guests in the Front Hall, where three Stubbs paintings show shooting, racing and the Charlton Hunt. The Card Room is lined with a Sèvres dinner service commissioned by the 3rd Duke. The house's replica of its original Axminster carpet is so lavish that the President of Bulgaria went to see it before it left.
The estate around the house hosts Glorious Goodwood, the Festival of Speed and the Revival, and has two 18-hole golf courses. The Goodwood Hotel has 91 bedrooms, and Farmer, Butcher, Chef cooks with organic produce from the estate farm. The Kennels, built by James Wyatt in 1787 for the 3rd Duke's foxhounds, is now the members' clubhouse.
