About the venue

Verney family estate near Buckingham with 170 acres of parkland and 18th-century Walled Gardens, hired dry for wedding receptions, parties and company events. The vaulted Stables seats 40 for dining, and the 67-acre Englands site holds over 5,000.

To mark 400 years of the Verney family living at Claydon, the estate is planting 400 specimen trees across its parkland. The planting began in the anniversary year, 2020, and should take about ten years.

The Verneys have owned land here for more than 550 years, but it only became their home when Sir Edmund Verney moved in in 1620. In 1827 the estate passed to Harry Calvert, who took the Verney name and married Parthenope Nightingale, Florence Nightingale's sister. Claydon House was given to the National Trust in the 1950s.

Nicholas and Alexandra Verney have run the estate since 2014. Events use 170 acres of parkland and the Walled Gardens, laid out in the 18th century for the 2nd Earl Verney by James Sanderson, a pupil of Capability Brown.

The Walled Garden covers 6,000 square metres and is hired dry, so organisers bring their own caterers and suppliers. Weddings here are receptions only, because the estate holds no ceremony licence, and the number each year is kept low.

Indoors, the Stables in the 18th-century Claydon Courtyard has a high vaulted ceiling and seats 40 for dinner. For festivals and large public events, a 67-acre field called Englands holds more than 5,000 people and has lakes on two sides.

The courtyard also has the Phoenix Kitchen café, a spa and a handful of independent shops. Central London is under 60 miles away.
