Bury Court Barn

About the venue

A family-run 17th-century barn near Farnham, on the Surrey and Hampshire border, with Formal Gardens by Piet Oudolf and 15 bedrooms next door. One wedding at a time, for 160 at dinner and 200 in the evening, plus parties and corporate days for 30 to 200.

A previous owner of Bury Court ran an opera season in its barn every year. The acoustics are still good enough for bands, DJs and full orchestral concerts.

The barn dates from the 17th century and was much altered in the 19th. It stands in Bentley, near Farnham, on the border of Surrey and Hampshire. The family that owns it lives on site, and the venue is not part of any group.

Outside are the Formal Gardens by Piet Oudolf, one of the leading designers of the New Perennial movement. Ornamental grasses and unusual perennials fill what was once a partly walled farmyard. Andrew, the head gardener, has looked after them for many years.

Weddings are exclusive, with one per day. The barn seats 160 for the ceremony and dinner and holds 200 in the evening, from 10am until midnight. Ceremonies are licensed both in the garden and in the barn, in front of a pair of château doors.

Fifteen bedrooms, including a honeymoon suite, sit next to the barn and sleep about 30. The in-house caterer, The Good Life, cooks for every event.

Corporate events use the barn, the Oast House and the Loft Space for 30 to 200 people. On non-event days the gardens open to visitors, and the Hop Kiln Café is open Wednesday to Sunday.
