About the venue

A Grade I listed Jacobean manor at Northiam, on the East Sussex and Kent border, used for small exclusive-use weddings of up to 70 day guests. It has three licensed ceremony spaces and a walled garden with yew topiary chess pieces.

In the walled garden at Brickwall House, the chess pieces are made of clipped yew and stand on a grass board. The venue says this is the oldest walled garden in Sussex.

The Grade I listed Jacobean manor dates from 1617 and was the Frewen family's home for more than 300 years. It now houses Frewen College, a school, so weddings are held only during the summer holidays and selected half terms.

Inside, the house keeps 17th and 18th-century interiors, with ornate plaster ceilings and a historic staircase. Couples have the Drawing Room, with its grand piano, and the connecting Great Parlour Room, along with a reception foyer and a get-ready room.

The formal gardens behind the house hold more than a hundred plant varieties. Among them are 300-year-old magnolias and 400-year-old mulberry trees. A Jacobean bowling green, an arboretum with the Lady Jane Frewen bluebell walk, and 100 acres of ancient deer park lie beyond.

A long, lawn-lined drive with a turning circle leads up to the front door. The venue is run by the hospitality company Woven, and a venue manager is on site on the day.

Northiam sits in the Weald, on the outskirts of the village and under 20 minutes from Rye, Battle and Tenterden. Ashford International is within an hour, as are London and Gatwick.
